Parliamentary Committee Chair responds to Sandu’s remarks on Georgia
“I cannot understand why an official from a CIS member state allows herself to criticize the foreign policy of another country, Georgia. Perhaps she has already finished abolishing her own country and now feels entitled to comment on other issues,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary European Integration Committee, in response to the statement by Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
According to Makhashvili, the issue of Georgia is often exploited to justify internal failures, and Sandu’s statement may be part of this pattern.
“Considering her history and previous statements about Georgia, the context becomes clear. The public remembers how she openly supported the violent overthrow of the government on October 4. Today, she has positioned herself as a loud voice making damaging comments about Georgia, despite having no official, professional, or national connection to our country. Over the years, we have seen politicians manipulate the issue of Georgia for their own purposes. Sandu’s statement may be another example. We have heard worse statements from her, and it seems she would not hesitate to dissolve her own country if necessary. This is not our concern. I call on everyone to stop using Georgia as a tool for manipulation,” Makhashvili said.
He added, “Georgia has nothing against Moldova, a fellow CIS member. As for our response, as an ordinary citizen, I would like to see diplomatic steps taken, including the possible summoning of the ambassador.”
Moldovan President Maia Sandu, speaking at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, stated that “Russia pulled Georgia back into its orbit by weaponising the fear of war, signalling that the wrong electoral choice would come at the cost of peace.”
