Parliament Speaker Kakha Kuchava said he saw no unity among opposition over the proposal to convene an extraordinary session of the parliament regarding alleged security files.

According to Kuchava, the session could convene after the local elections. “Convening a session one week before the polls never happened before,” Kuchava claimed.

The Chairman of the Georgian Dream (GD) party backs this opinion. Irakli Kobakhidze tagged speculation the Lelo party’s initiative. “This is simple speculation because everyone knows that plenary sessions are never held a month before the elections. At the same time, all MPs, both majoritarian and non-majoritarian, have completely switched to the election process. It is impossible to hold a session at such times,” Kobakhidze claimed.

Neither Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze regards any need for the extraordinary session before the polls. Furthermore, the ruling party MPs believe discussing the alleged security files within the special session would induce tensions.

Part of the opposition that disregarded Lelo’s initiative believe holding an extraordinary session and summoning the State Security Service (SSG) Head in connection with the “secret tapes” would have been natural in normal circumstances, but the country went beyond normal.

“Unfortunately, as a result of the steps taken by Ivanishvili’s regime in Georgia, the situation has gone beyond the point when using standard parliamentary tools makes sense,” said Giga Bokeria, Chairman of the European Georgia party in a statement.

The opposition United National Movement (UNM) party would expect no actual outcome even if the session occurred, party member Tina Bokuchava told journalists.

UNM Chair Nika Melia stated earlier that their MPs have no time to spare for ‘Ivanishvili’s gathering’ before October 2 elections.

The opposition Lelo for Georgia initiated calling the extraordinary parliamentary session on the allegedly leaked security files. Four opposition parties – For Georgia, Girchi, Citizens and Strategy Aghmashenebeli, joined Lelo’s initiative.
