Parliament Speaker reveals NBG discovered companies operating illicitly, followed by UK sanctions
“Yesterday, the National Bank issued a statement concerning three companies sanctioned by the United Kingdom, which were operating in breach of Georgian legislation and bypassing the National Bank of Georgia,” stated Shalva Papuashvili, the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia.
He explained that an investigation is underway, and a specific individual has been arrested in connection with the case.
“As the National Bank uncovered these activities, an investigation was initiated, and individuals have been held accountable. It was through this process that Britain also became aware of the situation. In September 2025, the National Bank identified these violations, reported them to law enforcement agencies, which then launched an investigation. As a result, certain persons have been held responsible,” added Papuashvili.
The Ministry of Finance’s investigative service confirmed that “an investigation is ongoing into the companies sanctioned by the UK yesterday, and some legal outcomes have already been achieved.”
