Parliament Speaker: Recognising Georgia’s territorial integrity is essential for normalising relations with Russia
“The real prerequisite for normalising relations between Georgia and Russia is the recognition of Georgia’s territorial integrity by the Russian Federation,” stated the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
Commenting on Mikhail Kalugin’s recent statement, the Director of the Fourth Department for CIS Countries at the Russian Foreign Ministry, who claimed that “Russia is genuinely aiming to normalise relations with Georgia, provided it does not become a ‘pawn’ in games against Russia,” Papuashvili responded:
“We have clearly outlined the prerequisites for the restoration of relations between Georgia and Russia. These relations will only be re-established if the Russian Federation recognises Georgia’s territorial integrity. The Russian authorities are well aware of what is needed to achieve normalisation. We are in favour of improving relations, but the fundamental condition remains the recognition of Georgia’s territorial integrity,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
