Parliament elects Levan Ioseliani as Public Defender

The Parliament of Georgia backed Levan Ioseliani, a member of the Citizens party, for the Public Defender’s office with ninety-six votes pro and no one con.

The parliamentary opposition Citizens party nominated Levan Ioseliani for the post. Nineteen candidates were competing for the position, but the parties could not agree on a single candidate.

Levan Ioseliani has been a member of the 10th convocation parliament since 2020 and a Vice Speaker since 2021. Ioseliani studied law at Tbilisi State University and has an MA from the Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Ioseliani served as Executive Director of the Georgian Civic Movement from 2018 to 2020. Previously, he was an attorney at the Bank of Georgia and TBC Bank.

Following the election, the newly elected Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, praised the MPs for their confidence.

“Thank you all who made this decision and expressed confidence in me. I will do my best to justify the position, which has an honourable name, Public Defender. I will be the Public Defender of every citizen,” he said.
