Parliament approves differentiated water and gas tariffs based on household consumption
Georgian Parliament passed the bill amending the Law of Georgia on Energy and Water Supply with its third reading. The amendment was backed by 75 MPs, with five voting against.
Shota Berekashvili, chair of Parliament’s Economic Policy Committee, presented the bill to MPs.
Under current rules, when setting water tariffs, the Regulatory Commission may distribute the cost of water supply among different consumer categories in different proportions until 1 January 2027. The bill extends that date to 1 January 2036.
Berekashvili said the amendment allows the Regulatory Commission to set usage-based tariffs for households during a transition period, extending to 1 January 2036 for water and 1 January 2038 for gas.
“The aim of these changes is, on the one hand, to protect citizens’ social interests and, on the other, to create a legal mechanism that promotes the efficient use of energy resources,” Berekashvili said.
