OSCE PA was only organization to condemn violent attack on presidential palace, MP Samkharadze says
“The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly was the only organization to condemn the violent attack on the presidential palace. During the meetings, they repeatedly emphasized their condemnation of violence and attacks on state institutions,” the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, told journalists.
Samkharadze noted that high-level meetings with the OSCE delegation took place over two days.
“Yesterday, it began with a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament. The delegation also met with all opposition parties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Public Defender, and the President. The visit concluded today with a meeting with the Prime Minister. If there is a lack of dialogue between political parties in Georgia, it does not require the arrival of an OSCE delegation. We see this situation clearly ourselves. The main reason for the lack of dialogue is that the opposition does not recognize the election results and, consequently, does not recognize the Georgian government as legitimate. They are not entering Parliament, which deprives us of the opportunity to engage in political dialogue with them. We explained all of this to the delegation, although they were already well informed, as this organization issued the conclusions regarding the 2024 elections. We simply exchanged opinions. This mission was not here to grant anything or impose recommendations—it was about observation and assessment,” Samkharadze said.
He also emphasized the importance of dialogue between political forces.
“Dialogue is a healthy process. Parties in political competition should engage with each other, which is why parliaments exist worldwide. In Georgia, we face an anomalous situation: a significant portion of opposition parties refuses to enter Parliament and occupy the mandates given to them by the people. This creates the challenges we have regarding political dialogue. We explained all this to the OSCE delegation, and they understood it well. Importantly, this organization was the only one to condemn the violent attack on the presidential palace. In all meetings, they reiterated that they condemn violence and attacks on state institutions. Regarding criticism, it is too early to say what the report will contain—it may include both criticism and praise. We will wait for the report to be released,” said Nikoloz Samkharadze.
