Opposition MP says first stage of US sanctions to extend on executives, prosecutors, high-ranking police officers

“This is the first stage of US sanctions that will extend on executives, prosecutors, and high-ranking police officers,” said opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze.

According to Khatia Dekanoidze, the Georgian Dream members had the only allies in the face of Hungary and Olivér Várhelyi (European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement), a representative of Orban’s government.

“The GD hoped that the European Commission would not reach a consensus on GD’s sanctioning, counting on Hungary’s veto. Now, PM Irakli Kobakhidze accuses the European Commissioner of blackmailing, a murder attempt. Bidzina Ivanishvili (GD founder) has no plan but only thinks about his finances and security. We have scary, mad people in the government,” she said.

Khatia Dekanoidze believes that the government committed treason.

“This is the most difficult to assess by the Georgian citizens. As long as Bidzina Ivanishvili is in power in this country, we will be in complete isolation. Kobakhidze, Ivanishvili and all their affiliates, an entire cohort, want to make Georgia a Russian swamp,” she said.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced a new visa restriction policy for Georgia that will apply to individuals who are responsible for or complicit in “undermining democracy” in Georgia, as well as their family members.

U.S. Secretary said he had also launched a “comprehensive review” of bilateral cooperation between the United States and Georgia.
