“The European Union has a concrete aim, and this is the protection of Western values and fight against the Kremlin. This means that individuals hired by Russia and working for the Kremlin should be disclosed,” said opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze.

Remarking on the Foreign Agents bill, the opposition lawmaker said that it was inappropriate to compare the draft bills of the EU and the Georgian Dream.

“I less expect that the draft bill to be dropped again, but nothing is ruled out. Be it amended or bearing a different name if the Georgian Dream decides to modify it by hands of People’s Power, it will be a step backward, and the international partners will respond adequately,” she said.

On December 12, the European Commission adopted a Defence of Democracy package ahead of the 2024 European elections. The legislative proposal aims to enhance transparency and democratic accountability of interest representation activities on behalf of third countries, aimed at influencing policies, decision-making, and the democratic space.

With the vote held on March 10, the Georgian parliament officially withdrew the People’s Power-tabled Transparency of Foreign Influence bill.
