No increase in bread price is expected till May, said Malkhaz Dolidze, head of the Georgian Bread Bakers Association. He said there is sufficient storage of wheat flour in Georgia for the next 2-3 months.
According to Dolidze, the Association received instruction on the supply of wheat and negotiations are underway with European countries and Kazakhstan. Prices went high on water, packaging material and other components, and bread will be more expensive if one sack of wheat flour becomes 70 GEL.
“In such case, the state subsidy program will likely be involved, or the situation will be different. Subsidies are generally avoided, but it is easier to do it with wheat and flour and not with bread, because there are quite a lot of bread-producing countries in the country, about 2,400, including small entrepreneurs,” said Malkhaz Dolidze.
