Nikol Pashinyan: Armenia needs broader electricity import options, including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Türkiye

“Armenia requires a wider range of options for electricity imports, including from Azerbaijan if necessary, given growing domestic demand driven by heavy investment in the artificial intelligence sector,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a press briefing.

“There are varying electricity consumption modes: at times countries experience a surplus, while at other times demand spikes. We are also exploring electricity import options with Georgia, Iran, and Türkiye,” Pashinyan explained.

The Prime Minister highlighted an ongoing EU-funded project to construct a high-voltage converter station near the Georgian border, designed to facilitate seamlessly balanced cross-border electricity imports and exports.

Pashinyan’s remarks follow a bilateral meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani government representatives focused on electricity trading protocols and regional energy infrastructure interconnectivity.
