New resolution mandates smart gas meters for all new buildings in Georgia's self-governing cities

Starting October 1, 2024, all newly built buildings in Georgia’s self-governing cities must have smart gas meters, according to a new resolution by the National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC).

GNERC chairman Davit Narmania highlighted that these meters eliminate the need for direct contact with subscribers and simplify accounting and reporting. Existing customers can also request smart meters.

From July 1, 2025, this requirement will extend to all municipalities.

Energy Ombudsman Nino Guleishvili noted that smart meters address common accounting issues, providing accurate and tamper-proof gas consumption data.
