New government decree restricts imports of M1 vehicle over 6 years old

The Georgian government has adopted a resolution banning the import, initial registration and temporary registration of M1 category vehicles older than six years starting April 1. The measure will apply alongside the Euro 5/V emission standards set out in the relevant regulation, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said.

According to the ministry, exceptions will apply to M1 vehicles whose transportation began before April 1 or which have already been imported into Georgia’s customs territory. The initial registration of such vehicles will be carried out under the existing rules before the deadline.

Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili said the new regulations will help modernize the vehicle fleet and reduce air pollution.

“The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture has implemented a number of important measures in recent years to improve air quality. However, additional steps are needed. This is important for the health of all of us and our children. The goal is to gradually renew the vehicle fleet and introduce higher-quality vehicles that produce fewer emissions and cause less air pollution,” Tandilashvili said.

The ministry also cited Geostat data showing that 1.814 million vehicles were registered in Georgia in 2024, the vast majority of them (85.7%) passenger cars. According to the data, 80.6% of registered vehicles are more than 10 years old.
