The Government of Nauru has issued an official announcement regarding the severance of diplomatic relations with the occupied so-called South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“The Government of the Republic of Naoero announces that it has withdrawn its recognition of the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia as independent States.

Accordingly, the Republic of Naoero has terminated its diplomatic relations with South Ossetia and Abkhazia with immediate effect.
The relevant countries will be formally notified through the appropriate diplomatic channels,” the statement reads.

For context, on July 29, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia issued a statement welcoming the decision adopted on July 21, 2026, by the executive body of Nauru, the Cabinet of Nauru, to annul diplomatic relations between “the Republic of Nauru and the Republic of South Ossetia, also known as the State of Alania” and between “the Republic of Nauru and the Republic of Abkhazia.” As noted in the Ministry’s statement, this decision reaffirms that respect for and adherence to the norms of international law constitute the cornerstone of healthy international relations.
