National Forestry Agency reports 51 incidents of illegal logging and timber transportation

The National Forestry Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture reported 51 incidents of illegal logging and timber transportation across Georgia in July.

The regional forestry services uncovered the majority of these violations. Around 102,874 cubic meters of illegally harvested timber from various species were seized and stored in the agency’s ‘business yards’.

Furthermore, the National Forestry Agency, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Supervision, found an unregistered sawmill operating within the state forest territory in Kakheti. The entity was sealed, and 15 cubic meters of lumber were removed and stored in the ‘business yard’. Given the criminal nature of this offence, relevant documentation has been forwarded to the appropriate agency for further action.

From January to July 2024, the National Forestry Agency recorded 481 instances of illegal logging and timber transportation nationwide, leading to the storage of 458,784 cubic meters of resources in ‘business yards’.
