MP Samkharadze urges clarity on NATO expansion to keep Georgian society informed
According to Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations, the U.S. National Security Strategy 2025 carries a significant message concerning NATO, and it is crucial to understand what the new U.S. administration intends by this statement.
“It must be clear whether NATO enlargement is the goal and aim of all alliance members. If it is not, then the Georgian public deserves to be informed, as we have long been striving for NATO membership. Up to now, there have been assurances that NATO’s door remains open. If a decision has been made to halt further expansion, we need to know. Although some say NATO’s door is closed, we should await official NATO decisions. The recent remarks by Rutte [NATO Secretary General], suggesting there is no consensus among allies on enlargement, are not encouraging,” Nikoloz Samkharadze told GPB First Channel.
The U.S. National Security Strategy 2025, published by the Trump administration on the official White House website, reads that the strategic priority becomes “ending the perception, and preventing the reality, of NATO as a perpetually expanding alliance.”
