MP Matikashvili: Excessive price markup goes beyond reason; PM’s investigation is crucial

“Members of the radical opposition are actively involved in the supply chains of online markets. It would not be surprising if it emerges that they are attempting to impose exorbitant prices on the public through these online platforms as a means of burdening them,” stated MP Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues.

According to Matikashvili, the investigation announced by the Prime Minister is of great importance.

“In Europe, prices in chain markets are lower than in comparable markets here in Georgia. The markup on some individual products is so large that it defies logic. Representatives of the radical opposition are heavily involved in the supply of the chain markets. It would not be surprising if it emerges that they are deliberately attempting to impose high prices on the public as a means of burdening them, believing this will foster widespread dissatisfaction with the government.

The Prime Minister’s announced investigation is vital. Parliament will also be scrutinising this matter, demanding answers as to how prices can be lower in France and Germany than here in Georgia, where taxes are lower. Everyone will need to explain how such pressure on the public is being exerted by companies with clear ties to the radical opposition,” said Davit Matikashvili.
