MP Matikashvili: EU statements on party ban are a “brazen attack” on Georgia’s courts and sovereignty

“The Eurocracy began issuing statements designed to apply pressure as soon as Georgia’s foreign-agent opposition came under threat,” said MP Davit Matikashvili, chair of Parliament’s Procedural Issues Committee.

He said no one, inside or outside the country, has the right to put pressure on judges.

“We are seeing a crude and brazen attack on Georgian justice and the country’s sovereignty, aimed at influencing judges before the trial has even taken place. This is happening when there has been a whole cascade of bans on anti-constitutional parties in Ukraine and Moldova, and no one said a word about it then.

On the contrary, the situation in Ukraine and Moldova was applauded as democracy in full bloom, and Euro-bureaucrats lost no time in making statements to that end. However, as soon as Georgia’s foreign-aligned opposition, acting as a fifth column, faced the genuine threat of being erased from the political landscape, Brussels shifted to releasing statements intended to apply pressure.

No one, inside or outside the country, has the right to put pressure on judges. When the European Commission tries to influence and pressure judges through its spokesperson, the institution loses both its authority and its relevance. Its double standards are precisely what fuels Euroscepticism, which, sadly, is building up in the country and will build up even further,” Matikashvili said.
