MP Macharashvili: Georgian and European publics no longer take EU officials’ claims of Georgia’s backsliding seriously

Guram Macharashvili, executive secretary of the People’s Power party and a member of parliament, has responded to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas’s statement that an in-depth discussion on Georgia will be held in January.

Macharashvili said Georgia had repeatedly been subjected to what he described as unfair statements from EU bureaucrats.

“Unfortunately, we have repeatedly heard unfair statements about Georgia from EU bureaucrats. According to assessments by various European institutions, Georgia consistently ranks among the leading countries. Against this backdrop, Kaja Kallas and other EU bureaucrats speak of Georgia’s backsliding, something that neither Georgian nor European society takes seriously anymore.

This is no longer even a double standard; it is an insult to all the societies before which such statements are made.

As for Kaja Kallas’s statement that Georgia will be discussed separately — they can discuss it as much as they want. EU bureaucrats have already discussed Georgia so many times and fought so hard to somehow hold Georgia back, open a second front here, promote LGBT propaganda and so on. Who would be surprised that they want to discuss Georgia separately?

I would like to remind you of a statement by Kaja Kallas’s predecessor, Josep Borrell: ‘The European Commission does not speak on behalf of the European Union; it represents only itself.’ His statement makes everything clear. Surely, no one can accuse him of being an advocate for Georgia,” Macharashvili said.
