MP Levan Makhashvili: EU has no objective grounds to suspend visa-free travel for Georgia

“I sincerely hope that all member states will exercise rational judgment and refrain from suspending visa-free travel for Georgia,” MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee, told the GPB First Channel.

He warned that another geopolitical misstep could prove costly for the European Union.

“We trust that the European Union will make a pragmatic decision, rather than an emotional one rooted in disinformation. In the wake of America’s new strategic approach, the EU finds itself at a crossroads where another geopolitical mistake could have serious repercussions. All member states must act rationally.

There are no objective reasons for suspending visa-free travel to Georgia; the European Union does not possess any factual grounds to justify such a move. Any decision to suspend should not be based on irrational fears or unfounded circumstances. Unfortunately, history has shown that many impractical decisions have come at a high cost to the EU. I sincerely hope they will avoid repeating past mistakes,” Makhashvili emphasised.
