MP Levan Machavariani: It is hard to find logic in Brussels’ actions; Kulevi is privately owned

“It is hard to discern the logic behind the steps taken by Brussels. In the case of Kulevi, the situation is straightforward: it is a privately owned port. The state plays no role in its operation beyond ensuring that it is not used as a territory to circumvent sanctions,” stated parliamentary majority member, MP Levan Machavariani.

Machavariani emphasised that neither sanctioned goods nor any sanctioned vessels enter the country.

“As for the vessel that was eventually sanctioned, that occurred after it had already docked at the port, and it has not returned since,” Machavariani asserted.

“Naturally, there are no legitimate questions left to answer, and I hope this whole situation is merely temporary. There is a six-month grace period, and I expect the port’s owners and Brussels will resolve this between themselves. I am confident it will be removed from the list and will not ultimately be subjected to sanctions,” the MP added.

The Council of the European Union recently adopted its 21st sanctions package, which includes the oil refinery located at Kulevi, specifying a six-month transition period before the transaction ban takes effect.
