MP Gorduladze: Georgian society has waited 14 years for UNM’s “bloody regime” to face legal judgment
“For 14 years, Georgian society has been urging us, asking us and expecting us to secure a legal assessment of the United National Movement’s bloody regime, once and for all. That includes the United National Movement and its so-called offshoots, which overthrew Georgia’s constitutional order and democratic foundations outright in 2004–2012, and which since 2012, right up to today, have continued to undermine democracy, trample on human rights and, by obeying instructions from abroad, help undermine our country’s independence,” said MP Archil Gorduladze, chair of Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, who is presenting the constitutional lawsuit at the Constitutional Court.
He said the task society has given them will be fulfilled at today’s historic hearing, where the court has both a duty and a challenge: to deliver a legal assessment of 22 years of independent Georgia’s history.
Gorduladze said the ruling team will present all the legal evidence, and the public will have another chance to recall the harm and anti-democratic actions of the “collective National Movement”.
“So the expectation of 14 years, and the task given to us, will be fulfilled today at a historic hearing, one where the Constitutional Court has both the duty and the challenge of delivering a legal assessment of 22 years of independent Georgia’s history and of events aimed at establishing foreign rule in our country. We will present all the legal evidence once again. The public can follow it live and recall again the harm and anti-democratic actions of the United National Movement and the four parties closely linked to it, which are either direct participants or supporters of these unconstitutional actions.
Ultimately, we expect the Constitutional Court to deliver the only legally sound and logical ruling: to formally condemn their harmful actions and ban these unconstitutional parties, whose true aim is certainly not to secure Georgia’s future. On the other hand, the outcome we expect from the Constitutional Court will clear the way for democracy and end the occupation of the opposition field by the collective ‘National Movement’. People who want to engage in politics for the good of our country will then have even greater opportunities to do so,” Gorduladze said.
