MP Giorgi Gabunia: Every state has the right to chart its own foreign policy; dictating who to avoid is pure Soviet thinking

“EU Commissioner-designate Marta Kos’s explicit instructions directing EU candidate nations to distance themselves from an organisation established by Donald Trump represent a blatant display of double standards and an unhealthy posture from Eurocrats,” declared MP Giorgi Gabunia, Chairman of the Parliamentary Culture Committee.

Gabunia pointed out the hypocrisy of European officials seeking to mend relations with Donald Trump on one hand, whilst dictating foreign policy priorities and diplomatic partners to sovereign candidate nations on the other.

“This is clear evidence of the double standards and ingrained attitudes held by Eurocrats towards sovereign states. Marta Kos was presumably referring to Western Balkan nations, such as Albania, Serbia, and North Macedonia, but regardless of who she had in mind, the reality remains that European bureaucracy has steered EU policy into a dead end.

Naturally, her declaration must be viewed as direct interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations. Every state retains the sovereign right to define its own domestic and foreign policies, including deciding with whom it establishes relations. Instructing countries outright not to cooperate with the United States or China reflects a Soviet mindset. Marta Kos’s statement was remarkably reminiscent of a decree issued by a Soviet Politburo,” Gabunia stated.
