MP Davit Matikashvili calls for EU to return to founding values and bridge democracy gap

“Today’s Brussels bureaucracy must return to the values around which the European Union was founded. Sadly, a significant gap has emerged between democracy and European officials, driven by the ambitions of the European bureaucracy and informal governments,” said MP Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues.

He noted that the will and wishes of the people in European states are at odds with Brussels’ actions in many cases.

“Many representatives from these countries have spoken out about this. Following criticism of America, the uncomfortable reality has been revealed: the European Union’s agenda has become distorted. On issues such as funding, it is time to acknowledge that there have been attempts—some ongoing—to circumvent laws and promote radicalism through illicit means.

The situation is straightforward: no side roads are needed. Georgia has legislative frameworks in place that enable the transparent provision of funds, and the public has the right to know how they are utilised. Yet, it appears that illegal channels are being sought once again to foster radicalism. Naturally, all of this fuels Euroscepticism,” said Davit Matikashvili.
