Milan Mayor: Europe is watching Georgia closely; we stand in solidarity and share friendship and cooperation
“Your representation has played a vital role for quite some time. Georgia boasts a large, active diaspora in Italy—an important community that significantly contributes to Milan’s vibrant life. This diaspora helps us embody the spirit of modern Milan,” stated Mayor Giuseppe Sala during the opening ceremony of the Georgian Consulate General in Milan.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze also attended the official opening ceremony of the consulate.
“Mr Prime Minister, this city has demonstrated both the strengths and challenges typical of all urban centres. While Milan faces the complexities of the modern world, solutions must be pursued in multiple directions. Progress is essential because advancements often begin at the city level and then extend to the national stage. We have heard that not only Milan’s mayors but also leaders of other cities are committed to developing strong relations with Georgia.
Regarding sports and football, these are important areas where Milan has a special significance. Tbilisi and Milan have nearly the same population—around 1.4 million residents each—highlighting Milan’s role as an economic hub for Georgia.
Yesterday, I shared with the Mayor of Tbilisi that it is especially meaningful and exciting that, starting from Tbilisi, other Georgian cities will also be represented in this partnership.
I encourage you to consider the potential of port cities; we have incomparable maritime hubs that can mutually strengthen each other and foster development. While I prefer not to focus on any specific city, I believe that economic integration is vital. This is an ongoing process, and we look forward to seeing the results of these initiatives.
Regarding the geopolitical situation, I want to emphasize that Europe is watching Georgia with close attention and genuine care. We are always committed to standing in solidarity with you. Our friendship and shared vision for cooperation are heartfelt and sincere. It is a great honour for us. We hope that Milan, our region, and our country will hold a special place in this partnership,” said the Mayor of Milan.
