Mikheil Saakashvili: We made serious mistake by not implementing more radical de-Sovietization
“I observe the pathos of these GTU/TSU gatherings, their Soviet-style rituals and conformism, and I am convinced that we made a serious mistake after the Rose Revolution by not implementing far more radical measures of de-Sovietization,” the former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, wrote on social media.
Saakashvili outlined several steps he considers essential for de-Sovietization.
“Once we get rid of them [GD Government], I will first propose several steps for de-Sovietization: publishing the list of Soviet agents and informants from the archives, introducing a dedicated school subject on the period of Soviet occupation, and addressing the restitution of property confiscated by the Bolsheviks, as is done in Central Europe. Of course, 99% of this property is now privately owned, but, for example, the descendants of Sarajishvili and other businessmen of that era should receive reasonable compensation from the state. This is necessary for historical justice.” Saakashvili wrote.
