MIA on Vake Park tragedy: All guilty to face full severity of law

Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze on Thursday held a press point after the 13-year-old girl received a fatal electric shock at the freshly renovated Vake Park fountain in central Tbilisi.

Darakhvelidze expressed “deepest sorrow” for the tragic incident and offered condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the deceased minor.

Deputy Minister pledged that “all those guilty will face the full severity of the law.

“He said that the probe was initially launched under Article 240 (1), part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia, but later re-qualified under Article 240 (1) I and II parts, which implies the breach of safety regulations. The sentence for the committed crime ranges from 4 to 7 years in prison.

Green Service Plus Ltd., which performed the works, as well as those who examined the finished product, are being questioned by the police.

Tbilisi City Hall’s relevant services, including the Tbilisi Municipal Laboratory, are also being interrogated.

Among those questioned also include the 8th graders from Tbilisi Public School No. 55, teachers, school administrators, and Resource Officers at Juvenile Affairs Main Division under Tbilisi Police Department of MIA, Darakhvelidze noted.

In light of the high public interest, the MIA will periodically notify the public, added the Deputy Interior Minister.

Earlier today, three minors were electrocuted while attempting to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the fountain. One died while two remain in the hospital.

One of the other minors is undergoing mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit. His vitals are within norms, while the third is still being treated at Children’s Central Hospital, according to the physicians.
