MEP Tobias Cremer: We must not give up on Georgia; we must stand by imprisoned journalists like Mzia Amaglobeli and impose sanctions on its de facto leader, Ivanishvili

“The Georgian Dream regime is attempting to drag the country back into its Soviet past and forge a one-party state; however, the Georgian people have tasted freedom and a European future, and they will not surrender either,” stated MEP Tobias Cremer during a debate in the European Parliament.

Tobias Cremer called on the European Union to stand by Georgia, impose sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, and secure the release of journalists, including Mzia Amaglobeli.

“How desperate must a government be to ban every single political opposition party? How terrified of its own people must it be to beat peaceful demonstrators, arrest journalists, and deploy chemical agents against its own citizens?

This is precisely what we are witnessing in Georgia, where the Georgian Dream regime appears to have entered a bizarre Soviet revival mode, ripping Georgia away from its European future, pulling it back into the Kremlin’s orbit, and striving at home to construct a Soviet-style one-party state.

Yet Georgian Dream faces one insurmountable problem: the Georgian people themselves have no desire to become Homo Sovieticus once again. They refuse to bow down and be silenced. Georgians have tasted freedom. They have tasted Europe. And they will surrender neither.

That is precisely why we must never give up on Georgia. That is why we must stand side-by-side with imprisoned journalists like Mzia Amaglobeli. That is why we must slap sanctions on Georgia’s de facto leader, Ivanishvili. And that is why we must banish Georgian Dream’s Soviet fantasies to where they truly belong—the darkest pages of our history books. Because Georgia’s future belongs in Europe,” Tobias Cremer declared.
