Maritime Transport Agency: Georgian sailors safe after drone attack near Iraq, repatriation underway

Georgian sailors are safe following a suspected drone attack on a tanker near Iraqi waters, and arrangements for their repatriation are underway, the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia reported.

According to the agency, it is coordinating with the shipowner and other relevant Georgian authorities to protect the interests of the sailors.

“The Maritime Transport Agency received information that an incident occurred on March 11 on a tanker near the waters of Iraq, likely related to a drone attack. Georgian sailors were on board, and they are currently safe. The shipowner and insurance company are involved, and the repatriation of the sailors is being organized,” the agency stated.

The report added that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international bodies are continuously monitoring maritime security in the Middle East, a key global trade route where many merchant ships, including energy tankers, operate under international security recommendations.

“The Georgian Maritime Transport Agency, together with other relevant national agencies, remains in constant contact with the shipowner and will take all necessary measures to protect the interests of Georgian sailors,” the statement concluded.
