Legal Affairs Committee starts working on amnesty bill

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Georgian Parliament has already started working on the amnesty bill.

Anri Okhanashvili, Chairman of the Committee, states the task of the ruling team is to carry out this process without delay. According to him, the bill will be initiated no later than the plenary session April 26-30 week.

He said consultations are planned with the opposition parties that signed the agreement to reconcile the positions.

“The agreement reached through the mediation of the EU and the US. We have taken the responsibility to put state interests above partisan ones. We have shown this political culture and now we have to prove it. The further steps are to reconcile the positions with the signatory opposition parties and support the agreed document together,” Anri Okhanashvili said.

The Georgian political parties signed A way ahead for Georgia, a compromise document submitted to the parties by the European Council President Charles Michel, at the Orbeliani Palace on April 19.  According to the agreement, the parties must discuss two cases perceived as politicized within a week after the agreement signed.

Charles Michel’s new proposal implies electoral and justice reforms, offers a pardon for all violations and convictions stemming from the 19-21 June 2019 protests and the conduct of repeat parliamentary elections in 2022 if the ruling Georgian Dream party fails to receive at least 43 % of votes in upcoming municipal elections.
