Law enforcers foil major narcotics smuggling attempt into Georgia; one person in custody

Officers from the Central Criminal Police Department and the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance have detained a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, identified as M.A., born in 1958, on suspicion of illegal possession and storage of a substantial quantity of narcotics, as well as their attempted smuggling into Georgia.

The offences carry penalties of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, or life imprisonment in the most severe cases.

Using a specialised scanner, law enforcement officials uncovered a significant quantity of the narcotic drug “cocaine,” up to 150 grams, concealed in the trunk of a passenger bus driven by the suspect at the Sarpi checkpoint.

The investigation is ongoing under Articles 260 and 262 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
