Kobakhidze: We must fulfil EU integration commitments; the European Commission must act fairly towards the Georgian people

“Georgia remains fully dedicated to executing its technical obligations on its European integration path, but the European Commission is failing in its own duty to act fairly towards the Georgian nation,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters in Kakheti, the head of government emphasised that while Tbilisi has made substantial progress in implementing statutory reforms under its bilateral treaties with Brussels, the European bureaucracy has failed to demonstrate its constructiveness.

“Our responsibility is to do everything possible on the EU integration path, and above all, that means fulfilling our obligations. Whereas two or three years ago we had implemented roughly 60 to 65 per cent of our commitments under the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), today we have completed approximately 90 per cent. That is where our responsibility lies,” Kobakhidze said.

“As for the responsibility of the European Commission and the European bureaucracy, their obligation is to act in a healthy, fair manner towards the Georgian people, our country, and our statehood; they are failing to perform this duty,” the Prime Minister continued. “That rests on their conscience. We remain optimistic. But these are their ultimate decisions and attitudes. I cannot speak on their behalf.”
