Kevin Hamilton: Eighteen years on, Russia’s illegal invasion and occupation of Georgia remain entirely unacceptable
“Eighteen years ago today, Russia launched its invasion of Georgia. That attack and Russia’s subsequent occupation of Georgian territory remain just as illegal and unacceptable today as they were in 2008,” declared Ambassador Kevin Hamilton, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, in a comment released by the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia.
According to Hamilton, NATO firmly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, and Russia must withdraw its occupying forces from Georgian territory.
“Georgia has been one of NATO’s closest partners for decades. Our partnership remains as strong as ever – grounded in practical cooperation, driven by an enduring commitment to resilience and stability, and focused firmly on the future,” Ambassador Kevin Hamilton stated.
