Kaladze: Peter Fischer exemplifies double standards; his actions are anything but those of ambassador

“Peter Fischer should cease meddling in political affairs and mind his own business, his own country, if you will. He is perhaps the most glaring example of double standards,” stated Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

Kaladze was asked to comment on an interview given by German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, to Radio Liberty.

In the interview, Fischer remarked, “You can say that EU legislation is nonsense. Fine. You are not obliged to join. Just do your job, Georgia. You can have laws on foreign agents and transparency, laws on grants, but you cannot join the EU with these laws. The same applies to measures taken against opposition politicians. In a liberal democracy, the government cannot choose the opposition; it must communicate with the people who are there. That is the core principle of democracy. People have the right to express their political views, even if the government does not like them.”

“Mr Fischer should stop interfering in Georgia’s internal political processes and mind his own affairs, his own country. His actions are the clearest illustration of double standards. I am uncertain whether I should even call him an ambassador, for by his conduct, he is anything but one. Let society judge what kind of person we are dealing with,” Kaladze added.
