Josep Borrell welcomes GD readiness to accept President Michel's deal

“We welcome the Georgian Dream’s acceptance of President Michel’s deal. I hope that other parties will move to reach an agreement,” Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated during the press conference following the informal video conference of the Foreign Affairs Ministers today.

“A new proposal was tabled on the authority of President Michel to try to look out for a way out of the political crisis. At the end of the meeting, we got some news. We welcome the positive indications, the Georgian Dream’s acceptance of the deal which has been recently presented. I hope that other parties will move to reach an agreement. I’m arguing all parties find compromise ways to continue Georgia’s democratic consolidation. Let’s hope, by end of the day, we will have good news on that.

I informed the Ministers that we are working together in coordination with the United States, through our delegation in Tbilisi, with the involvement of President Michel, and with the support of the EU External Action Service. We have put the proposal on the table that was accepted by the Georgian Dream, the party of the government, and negotiations are going on with the other parties to try to reach an agreement. The prospects are good. But, this issue was not discussed among the EU ministers today,” Josep Borrell stated.

The European Council President Charles Michel presented a new document to the political parties on April 18. According to a new document, if the ruling party wins less than 43 per cent of electoral support in local polls, early parliamentary elections will be called in 2022. Also, the parties must discuss two cases perceived as politicized within a week after the agreement signed. Ruling Georgian Dream and several oppositional political parties expressed readiness to sign renewed EU-backed compromise paper.
