Johannes Hahn – There is no reason to demand Suspension Mechanism of visa-free regime

There is no reason to demand Suspension Mechanism of the visa-free regime to Georgia – Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations stated.

“We prepare reports about visa liberalizations every year. . . . Of course, there are cases of groundless asylum seekers, but the number is insignificant in comparison to the number of those people who have contacts with Europe and use the possibility of visa-free traveling,” Hahn said.

Jean-Claude Juncker, a Luxembourgish politician serving as President of the European Commission, also said that Georgia was handling the visa-free regime related issues successfully. Junker responded to a question asked about the statement made by the French Ambassador to Georgia.

Ambassador of France to Georgia Pascal Meunier said that there were cases when Georgian citizens violated visa-free travel rules and claimed that the number of asylum seekers had increased after visa liberalization.

Junker said that the process was under control. “There are certain problems but the European Union is preserving the visa-free regime,” Junker stated.
