ITU Europe Head: Georgia's proactive approach and coordination with European structures to boost digital connectivity

The Internet Governance Forum is a key multilateral platform that supports digital development in Georgia while linking the country to the global community, said Jaroslaw Ponder, Head of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Office for Europe, during his working visit to Georgia.

Ponder participated in the Internet Governance Forum as part of a series of coordination meetings with the Georgian government focused on advancing digital development, particularly in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

“We are here to promote digital development, with a special focus on artificial intelligence. The government’s approach is noteworthy — transforming artificial intelligence into economic value and stimulating socio-economic growth,” Ponder said.

He positively assessed the development of Georgia’s internet infrastructure, highlighting high internet penetration and investments in modern technologies.

“We are proud to see strong internet penetration rates and investments in infrastructure, including 5G, in Georgia, which are vital at a time when the population is actively using artificial intelligence. The proactive approach of the Georgian government and coordination with European structures will bring significant benefits, especially in strengthening digital connectivity,” he noted.

According to Ponder, the ITU plans to expand cooperation across the wider region, focusing on digital skills development, industrial-level implementation of artificial intelligence, and its practical use by citizens.

“This is necessary to ensure infrastructure investments bear fruit and that digital connectivity has real, meaningful value for the country. We look forward to continuing cooperation with Georgia,” he said.
