Irish Senator G Craughwell hailed Ukraine’s and Moldova’s having qualified for EU candidacy but wondered why Georgia was not admitted.

He remarked on the June 17 decision of the European Commission on the application for EU membership submitted by Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

“I was delighted to see Ukraine and Moldova qualified for EU candidacy. However why Georgia was not admitted is a mystery. Have we forgotten August 8, 2008, when Russian forces began the invasion of Georgia. We in EU deserted them then why now?,” he tweeted.

European Commission recommended the European Council grant Georgia the European perspective but said it will come back and assess how it meets a number of conditions before giving it the candidate status. The EC granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status.
