Irish security officials - Russia plans to crack transatlantic cables in Ireland
Irish security officials suspect that Russian intelligence agents are trying to map the location of the fibre-optic, ocean-bed cables in Ireland, The Sunday Times reports.
The British media outlet says Russian agents are checking the cables for weak points, that can be used for diversions.
The Irish intelligence services suggest that Russia is using Ireland as its regional base by avoiding the Irish counter-intelligence agencies.
Russia’s interest in transatlantic cables was first reported in 2015.
