Ireland supports the European Union’s expansion and Georgia’s granting the EU candidate status, said Georgian Ambassador to Ireland, Giorgi Zurabashvili.
In an interview with the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB), Zurabashvili said that the resolution adopted by the Irish Senate on Tuesday is the confirmation of this support.
“The resolution in support of Georgia focuses on reforms and huge work done as per the Association Agreement. One of the main points stresses the geopolitical situation. It is significant that Ireland, a friend of Georgia, values our reforms and supports Georgia’s granting the EU candidate status,” he said.
The Senate of Ireland on June 14 adopted a resolution calling on the European Union and its institutions to grant Georgia the EU candidate status.
“We commend the people and Government of Georgia for their successful reforms in recent years towards consolidating democracy, ensuring human rights protection, rule of law, media freedom and good governance as well as strengthening government transparency and judicial independence”, the resolution said.
