Irakli Kobakhidze: Preserving our national and religious identity is core priority; we will exhaust all efforts to combat illegal migration

“We aim to tighten our approach as much as possible and to reduce illegal migration to zero in our country,” stated Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, during an interpellation in Parliament.

According to the Head of Government, the strategy approved in 2020 included less tangible measures in this regard. The new strategy, he indicated, may be reflected in an updated document, which will establish more effective means of combating illegal migration.

“This year, as part of our plan, approximately four thousand illegal migrants are expected to be expelled from Georgia. In a few years, this could lead to the complete elimination of illegal migration in our country.

We believe this approach is more effective than the strategy outlined in the 2020 document. Naturally, there is considerable public interest in these developments, particularly among European Union countries, where concerns persist about similar issues arising here. You can observe how the proportion of migrants in the population is increasing in certain EU member states. Ensuring the preservation of our national and religious identity remains one of our primary national objectives. Accordingly, we will do everything possible to combat illegal migration. Specific measures have already been implemented, and these efforts will undoubtedly continue in the future. As for the rumours and speculation, there is no basis for them. From start to finish, these are motivated by political interests,” Irakli Kobakhidze emphasised.
