“Our work extends beyond conservation areas. Over the past decade, forest restoration and planting measures have covered more than 7,000 hectares, and we aim to carry out such work on at least 20,000 hectares by 2030. We are also making progress in restoring threatened wildlife,” Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze stated during his address at the COP17 Leaders’ Summit.

According to Kobakhidze, biodiversity is deeply intertwined with Georgia’s history, cultural identity, and agricultural traditions, with the country standing out as the cradle of wine, boasting an 8,000-year winemaking history.

“Recovery measures for six priority species demonstrate the value of sustained conservation efforts.

For Georgia, biodiversity is deeply intertwined with the country’s history, cultural identity and agricultural traditions. As the cradle of wine, Georgia has an 8,000-year-old winemaking history confirmed by archaeological evidence, a remarkable diversity of more than 500 indigenous grape varieties, and the ancient qvevri winemaking method, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Equally significant is Georgia’s ancient wheat-growing heritage, with 14 of the world’s 27 documented wheat species found in the country, including five endemic species. Recognised by UNESCO in 2025, Georgian wheat culture further reflects the enduring connection between biological diversity, traditional knowledge and the livelihoods of generations.

Georgia’s natural heritage continues to play an important role in the country’s economic and social development. Healthy ecosystems sustain agriculture, secure our water resources, attract visitors and create opportunities for small businesses to grow and thrive. Protecting them is therefore not merely an environmental responsibility, but an investment in economic competitiveness, job creation and long-term prosperity,” the Prime Minister noted.
