Irakli Kobakhidze: Establishing Parliamentary Commission on Khorava Street murder case proves that government has nothing to hide
Speaker of Georgian Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze was asked about Tbilisi recent protest rallies, during the meeting held at the Atlantic Council in Washington.
Irakli Kobakhidze said that the protest rallies demanding the investigation of Khorava Street murder case reaffirmed the progress of civil society and political culture in Georgia in recent years.
“These protests demonstrated that not only civil society was developed in Georgia, but also political culture was formed. In this regard we had dramatic problems in the past, when none of the high ranking officials had left the post at the time of public protest. Now the main demand for these protests was to conduct the investigation correctly. The Chief Prosecutor has resigned amid protest. This once again proved that we have achieved significant progress in terms of political culture, ” – Irakli Kobakhidze said.
According to him, Georgian society is very sensitive with regard to human rights violations if they have any suspects about it.
“It is also noteworthy that during the protest we have established a Parliamentary Investigation Commission that discusses this case. It is the first time in Georgia when an investigation commission is created in the Parliament staffed by opposition in majority. This once again proves that the government has nothing to hide”, – Kobakhidze said.
