Irakli Kobakhidze dismisses border delimitation claims as ‘fabrications’, denying agreements on Gareji sector

“There have been no agreements, written or verbal, regarding border delimitation and demarcation, including the David Gareji sector, nor has any tangible progress been made in this regard, making claims to the contrary outright fabrications that have been easily exposed,” Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze informed journalists in Batumi.

According to the Prime Minister, the Georgian government’s objective remains to unblock the process and secure progress that strictly aligns with national interests. However, no adjustments have been made over recent years, and consequently, no border agreements have been executed.

“This was a straightforward falsehood and political speculation. It hardly warrants detailed commentary. Broadly speaking, I can assure you that no changes have occurred in recent years regarding border demarcation and delimitation, no changes whatsoever with respect to any neighbouring nation. Our goal is to restart this process and achieve progress, which must naturally be secured in accordance with our national interests. I emphasise, however, that no changes have been enacted. Consequently, no agreement on demarcation or delimitation has been signed in recent years. Everything else is pure falsehood and speculation, which was very easily exposed.

Regarding border demarcation and delimitation generally, including the Gareji sector, there has been no agreement – neither written nor oral – and no tangible progress has occurred. Therefore, I repeat: these are simple, false speculations that have quickly unravelled,” Irakli Kobakhidze noted.

When questioned regarding Lazare Jorbenadze, the Prime Minister stated that Jorbenadze had been used to disseminate a crude fabrication that was easily debunked.

As the head of government pointed out, claims had been made regarding a specific agreement, whereas no treaty of that nature could ever be concluded in secrecy.

“Every decision and act of the government is public and transparent. No agreement of this nature could ever be signed in secret. Consequently, this individual was made to spread a blatant falsehood. He is a tragic figure who ended his own life, as confirmed by testimony from a family member who was present in the apartment when the incident occurred. Discussing this is very painful; the man has passed away, and having to address how he was made to write lies feels deeply unspiritual and unethical,” the Prime Minister stated.
