Irakli Kobakhidze  - Changes into the Law on Broadcasting is necessary

The arguments which will be presented in the presidential veto are important for us and the discussion will continue on this basis, – the Speaker of the Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze said when commenting the President’s veto on legislative package of amendments into Law on Broadcasting.

According to Parliament Speaker, Constitution grants the President the authority to veto legislation passed by Parliament and the Parliament will discuss the veto naturally.

“We defined our position on the basis of very specific arguments.  The main problem lies in the fact that Public Broadcaster has a huge funding – about 50 million GEL and more, however the rating is quite low.

Obviously, our task is to promote Public Broadcaster’s rating. In addition to other measures, the adoption of appropriate legislative changes served for this purpose. If we do not want to changes, this is a separate issue, but we think that changes is necessary. One of the main tools was regulations related to commercial advertising as well as other issues reflected in the draft- bill. Based on this we made an informed and well thought decision. We are ready to discuss the veto and once again consider the issues already supported by the Georgian Parliament” , – Irakli kobakhidze said.

The President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili vetoed the legislative package of amendments proposed to be made into Law on Broadcasting.  President spoke about reasons of his decision at the press conference held today. According to Margvelashvili he has remarks mainly in two directions – the first concerns to advertisement and the second is related to procurement.
