Iago Khvichia: Ending the confusion, Girchi rebrands as Party of Free People to sever ties with enemies of liberty
“I want to congratulate everyone as we have taken on board the advice of our many supporters and are putting an end to this confusion: Girchi is changing its name. We are adopting what we have always been: the Party of Free People,” declared Iago Khvichia.
According to Khvichia, the rebranding stems from the fact that enemies of liberty hijacked a name once synonymous with freedom.
“We loved our old name, and we certainly do not disown our past, but the motivation for this change is that a name associated with freedom was hijacked by enemies of liberty, much like the LGBT community hijacked the rainbow.
This is a well-worn tactic in political struggle. A century ago, socialists hijacked the term ‘liberal’ in precisely the same manner and continue to misuse its meaning to this day. We wish to close this chapter of our political life.
We want to distance ourselves as swiftly and decisively as possible from that part of the past that connects us to enemies of liberty. Perhaps we should have done this sooner to prevent our opponents from parasitising our brand. However, better late than never,” Khvichia stated in a video published on the party’s official Facebook page.
