High Council of Justice nominates Davit Mamiseishvili for Supreme Court bench

The High Council of Justice (HCoJ) has formally submitted the nomination of Davit Mamiseishvili to Parliament for election to the Supreme Court of Georgia.

To facilitate statutory compliance checks, a parliamentary working group was established today within the Legal Issues Committee.

“I wish to inform you that the Georgian Dream faction has nominated Archil Gorduladze, Rati Ionatamishvili, Davit Matikashvili, Tornike Cheishvili, Akaki Aladashvili, and Tengiz Sharmanashvili. The parliamentary political group People’s Power has submitted Guram Macharashvili, while the European Socialists group has nominated Nika Elisashvili. As for non-parliamentary representation, in keeping with a long-standing tradition, Otar Chakhunashvili, Director of the Legal Aid Service, a public law entity, will serve on the working group. He will be joined by Associate Professor Moris Shalikashvili, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. I propose that the working group’s mandate run until the Legal Issues Committee reaches its formal decision on the Supreme Court nominee.

Furthermore, a letter was sent to the For Georgia faction, and following communication with their staff, it was confirmed that they will not be represented in the working group. In the meantime, full documentation submitted by the High Council of Justice regarding the candidate has been distributed to every committee member. We will be in a position to hear the candidate within the statutory timeframe, no earlier than 14 days from now,” stated MP Archil Gorduladze.

Six applicants entered the selection process for the Supreme Court vacancy before the High Council of Justice, leading to public confirmation hearings. Following evaluations by Council members, Davit Mamiseishvili emerged as the top-ranking candidate to advance to the final stage. During a subsequent closed-door session of the High Council of Justice, a vote was held to nominate Mamiseishvili to Parliament. All 13 Council members present voted unanimously in favour of his candidacy.

Parliament is expected to hold confirmation hearings for Davit Mamiseishvili in approximately two weeks.
