Health Minister: No major change in Patriarch’s health, medicines sustaining vital functions

According to Mikheil Sarjveladze, Minister of Health of Georgia, the health condition of Ilia II has not changed significantly at this stage.

Speaking to journalists, Sarjveladze said that as of around 20:00, there had been no major improvement or deterioration in the Patriarch’s condition, although doctors continue to monitor all medical indicators closely.

“At the moment, the situation is without significant dynamics. There are certain changes in some directions, but there is no talk of either significant improvement or deterioration. Doctors are constantly monitoring the data to identify any possibility of improvement. This is a process that requires careful observation and correct conclusions. As we said from the very beginning, the vital functions of the body are currently maintained with medication, and every hour and every minute are critically important,” the minister said.

Sarjveladze also noted that a highly qualified Turkish resuscitator will arrive in Tbilisi within a few hours to assess the Patriarch’s condition and review the treatment process.

“Tickets were purchased early in the morning, and in just a few hours a respected Turkish doctor-resuscitator will arrive in Tbilisi. We have agreed with the clinic that he will be allowed to participate in the process. I expect that his conclusions will largely coincide with the treatment methodology already being used, although we are waiting with positive expectations that he may provide additional advice,” Sarjveladze said.

According to the minister, transferring the Patriarch abroad is not being considered at this stage, as his current health condition does not allow such a move, and there is no objective basis to believe treatment elsewhere would produce better results.

Sarjveladze also explained that the deterioration in the Patriarch’s health began yesterday when doctors observed a drop in oxygen saturation while he was at the Chapidze Clinic. Further examinations revealed problems with hemoglobin levels and hidden internal bleeding, after which doctors quickly decided to transfer him to a multi-profile medical facility.

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II was admitted to the Caucasus Medical Centre in the late hours of the night following a deterioration in his health. Physicians have reported that the Patriarch suffered severe gastric bleeding, for which the necessary procedures were carried out and the haemorrhage brought under control. Ilia II is currently in the critical care department and on mechanical ventilation.
