Today, the democratic process in Georgia is under threat, and consequently, the Public Broadcaster, as a democratic institution, appeared in a difficult situation.
It appears insufficient time has passed for citizens, legislators, and other stakeholders to fully grasp the purpose of a public broadcaster. The standard we have established over the years is now under threat due to the current circumstances.
Society is increasingly polarized, perceptions are replacing facts, and there are calls for the GPB to compromise its integrity, violate the law, and act as a partisan entity.
For years, the Public Broadcaster has offered its platform and resources as a meeting place for all interested parties. For years, we have received refusals to dialogue, discussion, and joint conversation. We were even refused pre-election debates.
For years, access to our channel has never been a hurdle, yet the current environment is marked by intense confrontation, persecution of differing opinions, and growing intolerance. We have reached a point where some demand that our journalists deny airtime to opposing views.
Today, the public broadcaster is a team of over 1,000 professionals – decent and patient people – who are experiencing the weight of the pressure facing our organization. Nevertheless, we are committed to bridging the gaps between uncertainty and clarity, perceptions and facts, hatred and solidarity during this critical time for our country. We understand our role and function as a platform for all opinions and remain ready to serve society.
We urge all parties to move beyond alienation and engage in open dialogue on our airwaves, where the sole focus is the viewer’s ability to calmly and objectively analyze the information presented, and their right to change or remain in the stance that belongs only to them, their choice.
