Girchi leader says time will come when officials take sanctions seriously

“It is a fact that officials are in trouble for the fulfilment of unlawful orders. They may find these sanctions ridiculous, but time will come when they take them seriously,” said Iago Khvichia, leader of the Girchi party.

According to Iago Khvichia, sanctions are favourable neither for Georgia nor sanctioned individuals. Therefore, he recommended they distance themselves from the process, which would harm their future.

Khvichia stated that he lacked some arguments behind reasons for sanctioning that could be “solidarity with Georgian people, links with Russia or something else.”

“Maybe the official statement of the British government contains one argument, but we don’t know anything else. If we evaluate this step, I assess that these sanctions are no good for anyone, including this country. What is the argument – violence against demonstrators, links with Russia or establishment of dictatorship – I cannot tell, but everybody in Georgia acknowledges that there is hardly an institution left which does not have one or two sanctioned employees.

In response, the Georgian Dream promotes the sanctioned officials. Their cases will be revised someday to judge what these people were doing that their sanctioning became unavoidable,” he said.
